Best Aspect Ratio and Length for Instagram Reels
The export settings that actually matter for Reels in 2026 — resolution, aspect ratio, safe zones, length and bitrate — from an editor who ships them daily.
Most Reels lose quality before anyone watches them, and it is almost always an export problem.
Aspect ratio and resolution
Shoot and export 9:16 at 1080 x 1920. Instagram will happily accept other ratios and then crop them in the feed. Anything wider gets letterboxed and looks smaller in a scroll.
Safe zones
Keep captions and key visuals inside roughly the middle 80 percent vertically. The top strip is covered by the profile chrome and the bottom 20 percent by the caption, username and audio ticker. If your subtitles sit too low, half your viewers never read them.
Length
Fifteen to thirty seconds still performs best for reach. Longer edits work when the payoff is genuinely worth it, but every extra second is another chance to lose retention. Front-load the hook into the first two seconds and cut the intro entirely.
Export settings
H.264, MP4 container, 30 or 60 fps matching your source, and a bitrate of 10 to 15 Mbps. Do not upscale from a lower resolution — Instagram's compression is much harsher on soft footage.
Audio
Normalise to around -14 LUFS and mix music well under the voice. Add burned-in captions: most Reels are watched muted for the first few seconds.
